Michael Furbish of Furbish Company had been using 3433 South Hanover Street as a place to grow plants for his ground-breaking business. Furbish innovates and develops living systems, primarily green roofs, and green walls, to benefit the built environment.

In the row home on Hanover Street Furbish insulated the walls, brought in lights, and even added an aquaponic tilapia system on the second floor. After using the house in this way for some time, the company outgrew the space for business use, and Furbish offered to donate the entire building to The Well.

The row home is located just 2.5 miles (a 7-minute drive) from The Well’s community drop-in center and Hon’s Honey’s production Hive.

The Well had launched Hon’s Honey just about 6 months before Furbish’s generous offer and among a few different ideas for its use, was a storefront for Hon’s Honey.

Our growing social enterprise needs its own retail space. At 3433 Hanover Street, we will sell Hon’s Honey products, provide a small space to foster community gatherings with coffee and tea, and perhaps sell vintage and upscale clothing that comes to The Well by way of Hope Chest clothing donations. All of these things will bring in revenue for The Well to continue its work of transforming lives through long-term relationships, practical programs, and the healing power of love.

In December 2019, after months of paperwork, The Well took possession of the building at 3433 South Hanover Street in the community of Brooklyn.

Furbish Company took back their tilapia tanks and grow lights leaving us an open shell of a building and a myriad of dreams and opportunities.

But first, some repairs.

Our friends at YWAM Baltimore, strapped on some boots, pulled on some work gloves and did the hard, hard work of getting the space completely (pretty much) cleared out.

The roof at 3433 Hanover Street is leaking in several areas, even to the point of dripping through the soggy roof into the inside and creating puddles on the floor. This is our first big goal in the overall “Journey to a Storefront” project.

We would love to have your help! We will have tons of volunteer opportunities along the way for those who are can lend a physical hand to the process.
